In this day and age, it is vitally important to have a backup of your computer in case you lose your computer, it gets stolen, or for some reason that the hard drive unexpectedly fails. We would recommend investing in a disaster recovery backup program in order to give you peace of mind in case the worst should happen. But what is the best disaster recovery backup software? Read on to find out.
What is the Best Disaster Recovery Backup Software?
In our opinion, we would highly recommend Crashplan. What makes it the best disaster recovery backup software is the fact that it offers unlimited storage for around $60 per year, which is fantastic value for money. If you have a large family, you can also set up a backup on up to 10 computers for just $14/month. You can pay monthly, but since you will probably use the software on a long term basis, getting a 1, 2 or 3 year subscription may be a great money saving idea.
As I started, and chose the files that I wanted to backup, the upload began in earnest straight away. In terms of speed, I measured approximately 3.5Mbps. The industry average is around 2.9Mbps, so this is quite a good rate. If I wanted to restore some of the files from the Crashplan backup, all I needed to do was click on “Restore”, and there it was!
You can create a backup from the main Crashplan website, but if you are looking to backup a whole hard drive for example, we’d recommend you use the desktop version. You can set a schedule for how often to do a backup. It can be continuous, once a day or even once a week. If you don’t modify any of the settings, Crashplan will look for new files to backup every 15 minutes or so.
CrashPlan offers a unique feature with regards to deletion. The software will hold a copy of your deleted files for a period of 30 days even after it has been deleted from your computer.
Should You Use Crashplan?
This is a fantastic all round cost effective solution for backing up your computer in full. There is no knowing what may happen with your computer, so planning for every eventuality is a great idea in order to protect your data. It’s incredibly easy to setup and when you need to restore a file, this process is rather simple. If you are looking to backup one computer, it is a little more expensive than Backblaze. The fact that it has deletion protection is a feature worth paying a little extra for in my opinion. Crashplan is fantastic value for money if you do need to backup more than one computer.
