Summary / Key Takeaways

  • 'No Service' after eSIM install usually means the APN is not configured — not a network problem.
  • PDP Authentication Failure is almost always an incorrect APN username or password.
  • 'SIM Not Provisioned MM#2' means the eSIM is not yet activated on the provider's side — wait 5 minutes and restart.
  • Most eSIM QR codes are single-use — if it fails the first time, contact provider support before trying again.
  • Always try airplane mode on/off and a full device restart before contacting support.
  • iOS 17+ requires a carrier update before some eSIMs will activate — go to Settings → General → About to trigger this.

Fix: 'No Service' After Installing eSIM

Step 1 — Check APN Settings

The APN (Access Point Name) tells your phone how to connect to the eSIM carrier's data network. If it's missing or wrong, you'll have no data even with a full signal.

  1. 1iOS: Settings → Cellular → [Your eSIM Line] → Cellular Data Network. Enter the APN provided in your eSIM provider's app or email.
  2. 2Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Access Point Names → tap '+' to add a new APN. Enter the APN name, APN address, and (if required) username/password from your provider.
  3. 3After saving, select the new APN profile and restart the phone.

Step 2 — Force Network Registration

  1. 1Enable Airplane Mode for 30 seconds, then disable it.
  2. 2Go to Settings → Cellular/Mobile → Network Selection → disable 'Automatic'.
  3. 3A list of available networks will appear. Select the recommended local network (check your eSIM provider's app for which network to choose).
  4. 4Re-enable Automatic network selection after confirming data works.
iOS 17+ Carrier Update

Before any troubleshooting, go to Settings → General → About and wait 5 seconds. If a carrier update is available, a popup will appear — install it. Many eSIM activation issues on recent iOS versions are resolved by this update alone.

Fix: 'PDP Authentication Failure' (Android)

This error almost always means the APN username or password is wrong — or you've entered a username/password when the APN requires these fields to be blank.

  1. 1Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Access Point Names.
  2. 2Tap your eSIM's APN entry.
  3. 3Check the Username and Password fields. If your provider's instructions say 'leave blank', delete any content in these fields and set Authentication Type to 'None'.
  4. 4Save and restart your phone.

Fix: eSIM QR Code Already Used / Invalid

Do Not Scan the QR Code More Than Once

Most travel eSIM QR codes are single-use. If the first scan failed partway through (e.g. you interrupted it), the code may already be 'consumed' even though the eSIM didn't install correctly. Contact your eSIM provider's support immediately — they can re-issue the QR code.

Before contacting support, try this: on iOS, go to Settings → Cellular → scroll to the bottom — you may see an unactivated eSIM entry. Tap it and complete the activation without scanning a new QR code.

If you have only one phone and can't scan the QR code at all, see our guide to installing an eSIM on a single phone for four alternative methods.

Fix: 'SIM Not Provisioned MM#2'

  1. 1This means the eSIM profile is installed on your phone but the carrier's network hasn't activated it yet.
  2. 2Wait 5–10 minutes. Provisioning is usually near-instant but can take up to 30 minutes.
  3. 3Restart the phone. This forces the device to re-register with the network.
  4. 4Toggle Airplane Mode off/on.
  5. 5If still failing after 30 minutes, contact provider support — your eSIM activation may be stuck on their backend.

Frequently Asked Questions

My eSIM shows 'Active' in Settings but I still have no data. Why?

'Active' means the eSIM profile is installed, but it doesn't guarantee the data service is working. The most common cause is an unconfigured APN. Manually enter your provider's APN in Settings → Cellular → [eSIM] → Cellular Data Network.

Can I reinstall an eSIM if it fails to activate?

It depends on the provider. Most travel eSIMs are single-install — once you delete the profile, you cannot reinstall it without a new QR code. Never delete an eSIM profile unless you've confirmed with support that it can be reissued.

My eSIM activated fine but stops working after a few hours. Why?

This usually means you've exceeded the plan's data limit, or hit a fair-use throttle. Check your remaining data in the provider's app. If data remains, the issue may be a network outage in your area — try manually switching to a different local network.

Does cold weather or physical damage affect eSIM?

eSIMs are software profiles stored in a secure chip — they are not affected by temperature or physical damage the way plastic SIM cards are. The chip itself is soldered to the motherboard and rated to the same environmental specs as the rest of the phone.
